Awoooo!
It’s summer and that means it’s time to soak up some sun, hit the closest body of water, and turn up the music. The artist of the summer has to be K.K. Slider — you’re still playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, right? — and the user created takes on famous dog’s style are a joy unlike any other. Let’s jump in!
Modern earworms
There’s no shortage of K.K. covers of modern songs that you can’t get out of your head. Whether it’s “Old Town Road” or “Sunflower“, “Sicko Mode” or “Watermelon Sugar” the canine covers can hit any mood you’re feeling. Even the moods of “This Is America” or “bad guy” are captured by the fan community in proper K.K. form.
Standout track: “Roxanne” by Arizona Zervas
Gaming covers
As a gaming franchise there’s no shortage of gaming fans that happen to also love K.K. Slider. Sonic fans? Check. Mario fans? Check. Undertale diehards? Yup. Classic Castlevania types? Mhm. There’s even a Halo take. Naturally, the series that espouses its love for Isabelle is even represented: Sorry, DOOM fans.
Standout track: “Pokemon theme song”
’90s – 2010s
For those that grew up in 1990 and hit university in the 2010s, this is the set of songs for you, a mix of your formative musical memories and one chill doggo. Guitar Hero fans will appreciate “Smoke on the Water” (easy) and “Through the Fire and Flames” (not easy). Fans of Titanic will know this one. Fans of Shrek will know this one.
There are Lady Gaga covers for your enjoyment just as her little monsters would expect. The absolute biggest party song of the 2000s, Outkast’s “Hey Ya” has a K.K. cover version too. “Sail” was huge for the longest time until it wasn’t. The emotional ones of the group will enjoy “Viva La Vida” in K.K. form as well as “Hey There Delilah” complete with a lonely howl…as the Plain White T’s intended. And the angstiest among us (I’m one!) know that Nirvana lives on while Kurt Cobain does not.
“No scrubs” better try and holler at K.K, either, because he don’t want no scrub.
Standout track: “Turn Down For What” by DJ Snake and Lil Jon
Oldies
Finally, takes on classic tunes make up a major part of what K.K. Slider offers up both in game and in fan covers. There’s “Roxanne” (again) for those seeking their Sting fix. It turns out even K.K. wonders “What Is Love?” We don’t know either, buddy. If you’re standing on a landmine about to lose life and limb, there’s no better song choice than “Country Roads” to make you think of home. Fans of Kingsman: The Golden Circle will get that joke just as they’ll appreciate Elton John’s take on “Bennie and the Jets”. Robot dogs don’t perform the song but a virtual dog sure does.
Standout track: “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac
