Hop into a TIE fighter.
If you’ve been wanting to hop in the cockpit of any of Star Wars’ iconic spaceships in virtual reality you’ll have your chance October 2nd.
Star Wars Squadrons is releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with VR support for all but the Xbox release. 5v5 online dogfights pitting the New Republic and Imperial fleets against one another are sure to be the highlight of the game, complete with cross-play.
“We created this game for every Star Wars fan who has ever dreamt about soaring across the galaxy in their favorite starfighter,” said Ian Frazier, Creative Director, Motive Studios, via press release.
““Through the collaboration of the teams at Motive and Lucasfilm, we’ve been able to create a high-fidelity starfighter experience with an authentic storyline that invites Star Warsfans to explore never-before-seen corners of the galaxy in their own ship.”
That storyline will take place after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and is penned by Joanna Berry (Star Wars: The Old Republic) and Mitch Dyer (Star Wars Battlefront II). Players will alternate between sides in the story, battling from both perspectives with a customizable character on each squadron, and encountering a mix of old and new faces.
Those customization options will extend to all facets of the ships, too, and they “are earned solely through gameplay”. EA’s on-the-nose comments here suggest a learned lesson from failed loot box experiments past.
The game’s pre-order page on Steam promises cosmetic bonuses as well, including:
- New Republic Recruit Flight Suit (Epic)
- Imperial Ace Flight Suit (Epic)
- New Republic Recruit Starfighter Skins (Rare)
- Imperial Ace Starfighter Skins (Rare)
- New Republic Recruit Decal (Common)
- Imperial Ace Decal (Common)
Star Wars Squadrons will release for $39.99 USD on PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and Origin on October 2nd. We’ll see it in action this Thursday at EA’s Play Live event.
