Monotonous Monopoly.
The legendary plumber turns 35 this year and while the world waits with bated breath for news of a rumoured re-release of the greatest Mario games, Nintendo has instead been preparing cross-branded collaborations with the likes of Levi’s and LEGO.
Count toy maker Hasbro in the mix, now, with Mario editions of both Monopoly and Jenga.
As CNET reported in their exclusive look at the games, Monopoly looks to be fairly standard fare, with Mushroom Kingdom themed properties, appropriate player icons including a Yoshi egg, and Toad Houses and Peach’s Castles replacing houses and hotels. A yellow ? block will also join the game though little is known about how it will shake things up beyond adding sound effects.
Jenga faces some slightly more significant alterations as players utilize Mario themed icons to race to defeat Bowser, a spinner controlling at least some of the action, while the King Koopa looms overhead.
Nintendo’s recent penchant for merchandising means it’s unlikely this is all the house that Mario built has planned for the 35th anniversary. There will, almost certainly, be MyNintendo rewards, more merch, and maybe even some games on the way.
