Year of updates to follow.
Announced nearly two weeks ago (and covered in last week’s Good GFX), Firaxis are releasing their New Frontier Pass for Civilization VI, a series of 12 updates (including six paid DLC and six free) that includes eight new civilizations and their respective leaders and a bevy of new game modes, including today’s Apocalypse Mode.
Much of the paid DLC requires one of the game’s past two expansions to play so if you haven’t already nabbed those DLC packs this isn’t the content for you.
Right now, the Epic Games Store has Civ VI for free, which is certainly enticing. You can also download the Platinum Edition, which includes the two prior expansions as well, for 50% off. With that being said, if you’re going all in and buying the DLC, you can get the Platinum Edition nearly identically priced from the Steam Store right now. If you’re not an Epic Games person that is an excellent alternative. But, let’s be honest, you can’t beat free, and getting the base game without paying is an absolute gift.
Speaking to GameDaily.biz, lead producer Amanda Bonacorso offered up fresh insights into the DLC that lies ahead, saying “live service means an ongoing commitment to keep the game alive through new material and through continued updates to the base game”.
The appearance of Civilization VI appearing on consoles, including the hybrid handheld Nintendo Switch, poses new challenges and opportunities.
“Each time we release something new, our fans get excited about it, and a new group of people discovers the game,” Bonacorso tells GameDaily.biz, going on to note that the content release is on track despite the global COVID-19 pandemic.
You can buy either the whole New Frontier Pass (with updates to follow) or the individual Maya and Gran Colombia pack today.
